What we like about East Windsor

There’s plenty to like about living in East Windsor. The suburb of Hartford has a sparse, suburban feel, with most residents owning their homes. It’s considered one of the best suburbs in Connecticut for young professionals, based on a lower cost of living. Home value is slightly below the national average, but rent is above the median, according to Niche.com.

While the population dipped under 10,000 during the 2000 census, the town increased by 13.7% for the 2010 census, jumping 10 11,162. The number was largely unchanged for 2020, with 11,190 residents.

The town has five sections: Warehouse Point, Broad Brook, Scantic, Melrose, and Windsorville.

Past to Present

Created to serve boats transiting the river, Warehouse Point was founded as early as the 1630s. The east side of the Connecticut River was largely unsettled in the 17th Century because of the indigenous Podunk tribe in the area, but eventually, East Windsor was partitioned from Windsor in 1768.

In 1818, a local resident was making a well and discovered some interesting bones. The bones ended up at Yale University (at the Yale Peabody Museum) and were among the first bones to be labeled dinosaur fossils. This discovery helped set the stage for the “Bone Wars” of the late 19th Century that led to a massive increase in the field of paleontology and the knowledge of dinosaurs.

In addition to its importance as a port along the river, the area was home to many mills, some shipbuilding, and farming.

Education

Situated between Springfield, Massachusetts, and Hartford, Connecticut, East Windsor residents have multiple choices when it comes to higher education. Some of the larger institutions include Springfield CollegeElms CollegeAmerican International College to the north; Trinity CollegeUniversity of Hartford, and University of Saint Joseph are in Hartford just a short drive south. There are multiple community colleges in the area, including Capital Community College in Hartford. Asnuntuck Community College is in nearby Enfield and East Windsor is home to Lincoln Technical Institute.

The area is also home to several highly rated public schools including Academy of Aerospace & Engineering (high school in Coun, CT), and Hampden Charter School of Science West, and Springfield Preparatory Charter School (both middle schools in Springfield). Top private schools include The Loomis Chafee School (Windsor, CT), Suffield Academy (Suffield, CT) and Springfield Commonwealth Academy (Springfield).

Things to Do

With Springfield and Hartford just a few minutes down the road in either direction, there’s plenty to do around East Windsor. But for those looking to stay a little closer to home, consider the Broad Brook Opera House. Established in the Broad Brook neighborhood in 1892, the opera house is now home to live shows, including music, magic, comedy and more.

The Connecticut Trolley Museum is another local tradition, with 70 historic pieces dating back to 1869 from local Connecticut lines to as far away as Brazil. Take a trolley ride, be a guest motorman, and attend seasonal events throughout the year.

The East Windsor Historical Society also has a museum, documenting the area’s rich history pre-dating the Revolutionary period. The Museums on the Green encompasses the East Windsor Academy Building, plus the Osborn House, Broad Brook Barber Shop, East Windsor Probate Court, Barber Hill School and seven barns.

For the outdoorsy types, head to Scantic River State Park, a 784-acre park with birding, fishing, hiking and hunting.

Sports

Hartford is home to several professional sports teams and minor league affiliates. The Connecticut Sun represents the WNBA and plays in Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville. The Western CT Hawks play Division III in the Women’s Football Alliance in Danbury, and the Connecticut Hawks are a developmental team in the Women’s Football Alliance, playing in Windsor.

The Hartford Yard Goats are a minor league affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, based at Dunkin’ Donuts Park.

Hockey fans can root for the Bridgeport Islanders or Hartford Wolf Pack, both in the American Hockey League, or the Connecticut Whale, a women’s team competing in the Premier Hockey Federation. The Danbury Hat Tricks are a Single-A hockey team.

The Hartford Athletic is a men’s soccer team, playing in the USL Championship.

Food

Most of the area’s restaurants are along US-5 or in the Warehouse Point district, such as the Maine Fish Market Restaurant. Pizza restaurants are abundant throughout East Windsor; some of the top-rated pizzerias on Trip Advisor include Sofia’s Italian Restaurant, Henry's Pizzeria, Golden Irene's, Tomatoe's Pizza & Sports Bar, and Nonna's Pizza Restaurant.

Also on Trip Advisor, Jimmy Chen’s and Mei Tzu Sushi Bar & Kitchen have Asian cuisine covered, while Robert’s Real American and Nutmeg serve up tasty American cuisine. Stir the Pot and Sunny House are two breakfast spots worth checking out.
