What We Like About Fort Myers
Fort Myers has long been a tourist destination in Southwest Florida, renowned for its islands, beaches and attractions. Known as the City of Palms, Fort Myers is home to more than 90,000 residents and is the Lee County seat.
History
Originally home to the Calusa, Fort Myers was an actual fort during the Seminole Wars. Cattle ranchers and other settlers were important to the region during the Civil War. The town of Fort Myers was incorporated in 1885, just about the same time that inventor Thomas Alva Edison bought land in the area and built “Seminole Lodge,” his winter retreat. Near the end of the 19th century, a luxury hotel was built in Fort Myers, kicking off the area’s reputation as a winter destination.
Attractions
After Edison established his vacation home, carmaker Henry Ford purchased an estate next door. The two estates, known as the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, are now one of the area’s top tourist attractions, and include a museum and botanical garden.
A short distance from the Edison/Ford homes, the Fort Myers downtown is a U.S. historic district with 69 historic buildings, many containing local businesses. The area is also home to the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium, the IMAG History & Science Center and the Southwest Florida Museum of History.
Of course, many tourists come to the area to experience the area’s numerous beaches and islands. Some islands are more remote and can only be reached by boat, while others, like Sanibel Island, are accessible by car. Whether you’re looking to do some outdoor activities, catch some rays, collect seashells or just feel the sand between your toes, Fort Myers is a great starting point for your Southwestern Florida adventure.
