What we like about Jacksonville

Jax, as the locals call it, is the place to be in northeast Florida. There is plenty to love, from beaches to art to animals to food. Here are some of our favorite things about Jax:

Past to Present

Not only does Jacksonville have a lot going on today, but this vibrant, tenacious city also had a lot going on in the past, too.

The French were the first Europeans to settle the area in 1562, but they didn’t stay in control. Power shifted to the Spanish, the British and then back to the Spanish until 1822 when Florida became a U.S. territory. (It was probably because they were tired of playing tug-of-war.)

During the late 1800s, Jacksonville was a hot spot for wealthy northerners to escape harsh winters, but the influx only lasted so long. Southward railroad expansion negatively affected tourism, the yellow fever epidemic took hundreds of lives, and the Great Fire of 1901 was one of the largest fires in the American South.

But, fast forward to today. Jacksonville is home to over 900,000 people, a professional sports team and unforgettable arts, culture and food. Not only did they grow from their past, they’re thriving.

Education

As Jacksonville has always attracted tourists and residents from all over, it’s no surprise their colleges and universities do the same.

Jacksonville University is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a top regional university in the south, and the University of North Florida is one of the best colleges for criminal justice.

We can’t forget about the other colleges in the area, including Florida State College at JacksonvilleTrinity Baptist College and Edward Waters University.

Culture and Arts

The only mistake you can make when moving to Jacksonville is thinking you’ll run out of things to do. With miles of beaches, multiple State and National Parks and outdoor spaces—if you’re looking to spend some time enjoying the beautiful Florida weather, you’re in the right place.

On the other hand, there is plenty to do indoors, too. With museums—like the Beaches MuseumMuseum of Science and History, and Cummer Museum of Art and Gardenshistorical sites and societies—Camp Milton and Jacksonville Historical Society, and even arts— like the Museum of Contemporary Artdowntown art walk, galleries and markets, obviously Jax has culture and art to spare.

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens houses over 2,000 rare animals, and over 1,000 kinds of plants. But there’s more—The Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is rated No. 1 of 157 things to do in Jacksonville by TripAdvisor. Go say hey to these cool critters and make some new friends in Jacksonville!

Sports

If you’re looking for action, there’s that too. Check out a professional football game at TIAA Bank Field where the hometown Jacksonville Jaguars take on opponents. Or catch the Florida vs. Georgia college football game, The Players Championship golf tournament or numerous minor league games.

Food

With exciting adventures at every corner, you’re bound to work up an appetite. Good thing Jacksonville has a million (okay not quite) restaurants, food trucks, bistros and fine dining options to choose from.

With 1,100 miles of shoreline, it makes sense that some of Jacksonville’s most popular restaurants are on the water. Check out Whitey's Fish Camp to dock and dine (voted best place to dock and dine by JaxBest).

Jacksonville is also home to Mayport Shrimp, aka locally caught wild Atlantic shrimp. Swim on over to The Sandollar Restaurant and MarinaPalms Fish Camp or Market 32 to try this classic dish in Florida’s shrimp capital!

Whether you’re hungry for brunch (Biscottis), Mexican food (Taco Lu), fine dining (The Wine Cellar or Matthew’s) or Italian (D&LP Subs or Vito’s)—you’ll find it in Jacksonville.
