What We Like About Tampa
Then to now
A lot has changed in the Tampa Bay area since Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon arrived in 1513.
The city became part of the United States in 1845, mined and shipped phosphates, built a cigar factory, and played a role in the Spanish-American War. Not to mention there were pirates (more on that later).
Today, Tampa is the third-largest city in Florida with around 400,000 residents. There are also 5 Fortune 500 companies that call Tampa home: Publix Super Markets, Tech Data, Jabil, Mosaic, and Raymond James Financial.
There’s no way Ponce de Leon would recognize Tampa if he visited tomorrow. That’s because Tampa has experienced growth, advancement and success in the half-millennium since he last visited.
Education
Tampa has a number of colleges and universities that are nationally recognized. These institutions draw students from all over the world.
University of Tampa is recognized as one of the best colleges by the Princeton Review, and consistently lists as one of the top colleges in America by Forbes.
University of South Florida ranks well as a top public school and has one of the best undergraduate engineering programs, according to U.S. News and World Report.
Beyond the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida, the Tampa Bay area is also home to Strayer University Tampa Westshore Campus, Florida College, South University (Tampa Campus), Hillsborough Community College, Southern Technical Institute and Stetson University College of Law, just to name a few.
Around town (culture and arts)
Tampa is alive. Everywhere you turn there’s something to do. From museums—like the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, American Victory Ship Mariners Museum and Cracker Country Living History Museum, to the entertainment centers—like Straz Center for the Performing Arts and Tampa Theater, Tampa embraces art, creativity and culture.
Tampa also embraces sports. They’re home to three professional teams—the Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tampa Bay Lightning—playing at Tropicana Field, Raymond James Stadium and Amalie Arena, respectively.
Thanks to real buccaneers (the pirates, not the football team), Tampa is home to the largest pirate festival in the world—the Gasparilla Festival. The pirate Jose Gaspar invaded Tampa in 1821, which spurred on an annual celebration with music, parades and more.
Not to mention there’s Busch Gardens, the Florida Aquarium, Ybor City, and you may even run into a tiger at Big Cat Rescue. But one thing’s for sure, you’ll never run out of things to do in Tampa.
Food
You won’t run out of things to eat either. With tasty waterfront restaurants like Hula Bay Club and Jackson’s, fine dining options like Bern’s Steakhouse and Eddie V’s, plus cultural culinary experiences like Ulele and La Teresita.
So what?
Adventuring, eating, experiencing, living. That’s what Tampa is about.
We get why you call Tampa home—everyone else does too. It’s rated well Niche’s Best Cities to Live in America list.
We’re thrilled to be in Tampa, and help every resident find the best storage solutions. Store Space cares about Tampanians!
