What We Like About Tallahassee
There’s a lot to like about the capital city. First and foremost, it’s the state capital, meaning lots of important jobs. Second, it’s a college town, with a student population of more than 70,000. Add to that An All-America City Award and lots of activities and you can see why we like Tallahassee!
History
If you didn’t know, Tallahassee became Florida’s territorial capital by virtue of being situated between St. Augustine and Pensacola, the two former capitals of East and West Florida, respectively. The legislature got tired of traveling between the two locations and picked Tallahassee, erecting a log building that in 1824 hosted the territory’s third legislative session.
As the city grew into the capital, schools started forming as well, including the universities that would grow into modern-day Florida State University and Florida A&M (FAMU). Of course, the state government started to dominate the landscape, as it were, evolving into the city’s largest employer.
Attractions
The Florida State Seminoles football team is the prime attraction in Tallahassee, drawing around 80,000 fans to “The Doak” (Doak Campbell Stadium) on gameday each fall. The city is also home to a wide range of museums and historical sites, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Florida History, plus the Carnegie Library and the Foster Tanner Fine Arts Gallery, both on the FAMU campus.
Of course, fans of government can take in the Florida State Capitol building, the Florida Supreme Court and the Florida Governor’s Mansion.
The city also hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year, including the FSU prep rally Downtown Getdown, the First Friday festivals at Railroad Square, Springtime Tallahassee and more.
