Climate-controlled storage units
The weather in Hillsborough ranges from hot in the summer to cold in the winter, which is great for knowing which season you’re in, but not so great for storing sensitive items with natural fibers including clothing and wood furniture, electronics, and so on. Fortunately, climate-controlled storage units mitigate much of the damage that can be caused by heat, humidity and temperature swings.
Indoor storage units
Climate-controlled units are most frequently housed indoors, which adds protection for visitors from the outside elements.
Drive-Up Storage Units
Our storage location offers drive-up storage units, making loading and unloading almost as easy as getting out of your car or truck! A limited number of these units can also be used for vehicle storage.
Vehicle Storage
For many homeowners, the need for vehicle storage stems from HOA or municipal regulations, the lack of proper security such as an apartment complex, or simply the need to manage at-home parking. Our covered vehicle parking comes in 10x20 or 10x30 to fit many different types of vehicles.
Car Storage
Car storage can be important for restoration projects, collector vehicles, or hand-me-downs for teens not quite ready to drive. Most cars and many pick-up trucks can be stored in 20-ft. long spaces.
Motorcycle Storage
Motorcycles are often stored during the winter months, making a storage unit a must-have. A single motorcycle usually needs a 5x10 space, while side by sides, three-wheelers, sidecars and similar motorcycles will need a minimum of a 10x10 or 10x15 space. Most storage facilities will require a motorcycle to be kept in a designated type of unit, so please check with management before renting.
RV Storage
RV and camper storage is important to keep your vehicle out of the weather during the off-season. Drive-up parking access can be used for Class B (mid-sized) and C (camper vans) motorhomes (and the smallest of the Class A type) as well as pop-ups, pull-behind trailers and more. Because some facilities have height restrictions, make sure to check with management before renting.
Boat Storage
Boat storage in a facility is typically less expensive than keeping a boat on the water year-round, and more practical than storing at home. Smaller boats such as ski boats, bass boats and similar can be stored via units with drive-up access. Personal watercraft such as kayaks, canoes and paddleboards can be carried to storage units, while jet skis and similar need at least 10x15 storage. Be sure to include the trailer’s tongue and bridge height when figuring dimensions, and make sure to check with management before renting if you’re not sure.
What we like about Hillsborough Township
Located in Somerset County, Hillsborough Township is comprised of several smaller communities, including Hillsborough, Flagtown, and Neshanic. In total, Hillsborough Township takes up 55 sq. mi. and has a population of 43,276, according to the 2020 census.
But those simple facts don’t quite tell the story. The township has a rich historic background, was home to a well-known philanthropist, and is regarded as one of the top places to raise a family in New Jersey.
Past to Present
Hillsborough Township was first granted a charter in 1771, and soon thereafter played an important role in the Revolutionary War.
After the victory at the Battle of Princeton in 1777, colonial troops led by Gen. George Washington stopped on Sourland Mountain in the southeast part of Hillsborough to drill his troops. The British troops were tricked into thinking Washington had more men than he had, and called off their planned counterattack, allowing the colonials safe transit to Morristown.
A few years later, in 1798, Hillsborough was incorporated. At the time, the population was less than 2,500, which didn’t grow too much in the next century and a half. But the area experienced a boom in the post-WWII years, almost doubling between the 1950 and 1960 census, jumping from 3,875 to 7,584. The population has increased in each subsequent census, topping 38,000 in 2010.
Education
According to Niche.com’s school rankings, Hillsborough has some of the top public schools in all of New Jersey. Niche ranks Princeton Charter School as the second-best public elementary school in New Jersey. Thomas Edison Energysmart Charter School, Hillsborough High School and Somerset County Vocational are three of the better public high schools in the state (Nos. 73, 75 & 81 respectively). Also in the top 100 is Sunnymead Elementary (No. 95).
The area also boasts a number of well-regarded private schools, including The Pingry School, Princeton International School of Math and Science, Rutgers Preparatory School, each ranking in the top 10 of private New Jersey high schools.
Of course, Princeton University is less than 15 miles away in Princeton, N.J. The Ivy League School is considered one of the top universities in the nation.
Activities
Hillsborough Township has a number of local parks and nature trails, managed by the Somerset County Park Commission. One popular destination is the 6,300-acre Sourland Mountain Preserve, offering recreational opportunities in an undisturbed natural setting, including hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, bouldering, and horseback riding.
The area is also home to Duke Farms, an estate originally established by James Duke, who founded Duke Power and American Tobacco Company. When he died in 1925, his 12-year-old daughter, Doris Duke, sued to take control of the estate. She gained fame as an art collector, horticulturist, socialite and philanthropist. Among her many works, she created a public-display garden on the grounds, expanding on the original greenhouses on the farm. While the Duke Farms Foundation has significantly altered the estate from its original purpose, it now serves as a public park, which is home to 30 endangered species and 230 varieties of birds.
Sports
As you might imagine, Hillsborough’s proximity to New York City and Philadelphia gives locals a number of pro teams to root for (and against). Closer to home, though, is Princeton University. The Tigers field 18 teams for both their men’s and women’s programs, tallying multiple national championships in football, basketball, lacrosse, fencing, golf, rowing, and field hockey.
