What we Like About Rochester

Resilience

Rochester has been nothing if not resilient.

As one of America’s first “boomtowns,” the city in the Genesee River Valley came to prominence first for its many flour mills, then later as a manufacturing center.

As the population grew to meet the boom, Rochester subsequently gave rise to a number of iconic American brands like Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, Xerox, Gannett (media), Western Union, French's (mustard), Ragú (sauces), PaychexWegmans (supermarkets) and many more.

Times have changed and even though some of those businesses have moved on, Rochester has adapted, and the area’s economy has shifted to technology and education in recent years.

Education

With the existence of so many innovative companies throughout its history, Rochester naturally attracted colleges and universities focused on technology and research.

Two of the nation's top research universities are in the Rochester area, including University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). In 2010, the greater Rochester area ranked 8th-best college town in the U.S. by the American Institute for Economic Research. The study cited multiple factors including the overall academic environment, cost of living and city accessibility, research opportunities and much more.

Including RIT and University of Rochester, there are 22 colleges and universities in the area, including SUNY Geneseo, Bryant & Stratton College in Greece and Henrietta, Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, Empire State College's Genesee Valley Learning Center, Monroe Community College, Nazareth College and more.

Culture & Food

Rochester is home to several historical and cultural centers, such as the Rochester City Ballet, the Rochester Philharmonic OrchestraGarth Fagan Dance, the George Eastman Museum, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Rochester Contemporary Art Center, the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House and many more.

There are many cultural festivals held in Rochester, including the Rochester International Blues Festival, the Lilac Festival, and the Rochester International Film Festival, just to name a few.

There are multiple professional sports teams in the region, including the Red Wings (baseball), the Americans (hockey), the Rhinos (soccer), the RazorSharks (basketball), the Knighthawks (indoor lacrosse) and Flower City Union (soccer).

Nightlife in town is centered around East and Alex in downtown. It’s home to many nightclubs, lounges, coffee shops, bars, and high-end restaurants. The fun isn’t limited to downtown—there are numerous other hip districts around town, including Southeast (in the Park Avenue neighborhood and University Avenue areas) and South Wedge (close to the University of Rochester), both home to local businesses, cafes, restaurants, bars and nightlife. Rochester is ideally located for some fantastic day trips, usually less than an hour's drive.

Speaking of cuisine, while not every restaurant is just some guy’s name, some of the best-known ones are: we’re thinking Bill Gray’s and Tom Wahl’s for burgers, dogs and shakes, or Nick Tahou Hots, home of the original Garbage Plate. Of course, there’s also DiBella’s Old Fashioned Subs, and enough pizza placesto please the pickiest palates. There are plenty more food options, so check out the foods Rochester is known for

What’s it add up to?

Great resolve to transform, awesome educational opportunities, lots to do.

Is Rochester a good place to live? We certainly think so. With everything going for it, it’s no surprise that Rochester was No. 3 on Forbes’ 2010 list of America's Best Places To Raise A Family

Whether you’re a recent transplant, have been here for generations, or are just here for the educational opportunities, Store Space cares about Rochesterians.
