What we like about Columbus

At the confluence of the Olentangy and Scioto rivers, Columbus is the capital of Ohio and the state’s most populous city. As such, Columbus has all the best stuff Ohio has to offer: The Ohio State University (emphasize “the”). Wendy’s. Six Fortune 500 companies. The Ohio State Fair. Jack Nicklaus. Ohio is a great city to visit or live in, with a low cost of living and a lot going on, which is why we consider Columbus a good place to live.

The Ohio State University

Annually ranked among the top 50 colleges by U.S. News and World Report, OSU has also been called a “Public Ivy” for offering a college experience similar to that of the Ivy League schools. The Columbus campus is one of the largest in the country, with nearly 50,000 undergrads and another 15,000 grad students. The school offers more than 200 undergrad degrees and many highly ranked graduate programs.

The Buckeyes

On the gridiron, the Buckeyes have won 8 national championships, 41 conference championships and have had 10 undefeated seasons since 1890. OSU has produced seven Heisman Trophy winners, including Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the prestigious award for college's best football player. Those achievements are among the best in college football, highlighted by the annual battle with TTUN, dubbed one of the greatest rivalries in all sports. The 2016 contest was attended by 110,045 in Ohio Stadium, a.k.a. the Horseshoe.

Of course, OSU’s not all about football. Check out all the school’s sports and root for Buckeyes on the courts, the fields, the ice, the links, and everywhere else they wear the Scarlet and Gray.

TBDBITL

The Ohio State University Marching Band is the largest brass-and-percussion-only band in the world and, if you’ve seen them perform Script Ohio during Buckeyes’ football home games or watched them morph into a Party Rock Country Extravaganza or the band Rush, for instance, you know why they are called “The Best D*&% Band In The Land.”

Pro Sports

For professional sports, Columbus had to look north or south to root for teams from Cleveland (Browns, Cavs or Indians) or Cincinnati (Reds, Bengals). But that all changed in the mid-‘90s when the Columbus Crew came on the scene. The Crew have twice won the MLS Cup and compete at the soccer-only Lower.com Field, which opened in 2021.

NHL expansion came to Columbus in 2000, with the Blue Jackets. The hockey team, which plays at Nationwide Arena, struggled for their first 10 years, but have started to make inroads in the Stanley Cup playoffs since their first appearance in 2009.

The teams anchor the city’s Arena District, which has been a key to downtown renovation efforts.

Show me the money

Not everything in Cbus revolves around OSU. It’s also home to half a dozen corporations listed in the U.S. Fortune 500: Cardinal Health, American Electric Power, L Brands, Nationwide, Alliance Data, and Huntington Bancshares. These and many more corporations contribute to the area’s gross domestic product of $134 billion in 2019.

Several restaurant chains are based in the area, including Wendy’s (the third-largest hamburger chain, but arguably the best Twitter account), White Castle, Charleys Philly Steaks, Steak Escape, Bob Evans, and more.

Memorable and historic neighborhoods

Just north of the Arena District lies Short North and Victorian Village, two of the city’s most historic and eclectic neighborhoods. Short North is home to many art galleries, pubs and restaurants, and is known for its 17 lighted metal archways that span High Street, reminiscent of the way the area looked at the turn of the 20th Century.

To the south of downtown are German Village and the brewery district, both eclectic and historic in their own rights. Make sure to stop at Schmidt’s Sausage House (try the Bahama Mama!), which started with a meatpacking venture in 1886.

Ohio State Fair

For 12 days in late July – early August, all eyes turn to the Ohio State Fair. At its current location in the Ohio Expo Center and State Fairgrounds district since 1886, nearly a million people visited in 2015. Come for the agricultural exhibits (can you say “butter sculptures”?), stay for the food, rides and concerts!

Museums and public arts

Columbus has its fair share of museums and galleries. The Columbus Museum of Art has some great examples of Impressionism, while the Wex (a.k.a., Wexner Center for the Arts on the OSU campus) features contemporary art.

Explore science and industry at COSI or the state’s history at Ohio History Connection. Then stop and smell the roses at Franklin Park Conservatory, featuring 13 acres of botanic gardens, community growing plots and much more.

Famous Columbusites

The who’s who of people born in Columbus could fill volumes: Jack NicklausJames ThurberEddie RickenbackerBeverly D’AngeloJack HannaTwenty One Pilots, RJD2, Rascal Flatts, and R.L. Stine are just a sampling of the famous folk from central Ohio.
