The History of Humble
The City of Humble was originally settled in the early 19th century. However, it wasn’t until the early 1900s that Humble found its footing as an oil boomtown. The discovery of oil brought an increase in population and wealth to the Humble area.
In 1904, railroad developments in the area made it possible for oil to be shipped out of Humble. One year later, the Humble oilfield outpaced the rest of Texas in oil production. The Humble Oil & Refining Company was founded in 1911 and eventually became known as Exxon. Oil production in Humble largely receded in the mid-20th century, and many residents in the area returned to other industries including farming and logging.
Besides its time as a bustling boomtown, Humble was a rather quiet city. However, this changed in 1969 when the Houston Intercontinental Airport was opened. Even today, the Houston airport is one of the largest airports in the United States and is the second busiest airport in the state of Texas.
These days, Humble largely serves as a gateway neighborhood to the Houston metropolitan area. The neighborhood is home to several outdoor recreation areas, museums and culinary attractions.
