How to Store a Mattress Topper in 4 Steps

A well cared for and properly stored mattress topper can last up to five years or longer, so why not take the extra steps to store it correctly? They may be made from memory foam or cotton and are unsteady to carry, but if stored properly they will retain their shape and function for years to come.

We’ve created this guide to so you can maximize the lifespan of your mattress topper—and not lose any more sleep over storing it! Here's how to store a mattress topper in 4 steps:

1. Clean Your Mattress Topper

One of the best ways to ensure your mattress topper stays in good condition in storage is cleaning it beforehand. Any dirt or moisture left in your mattress topper can result in the growth of mold and mildew, or attract pests.

A: Take off all the bedding

This step is might seem fairly obvious, but before you start preparing your mattress for storage, make sure to take off all bedding and mattress protectors.

B: Vacuum

After you’ve stripped the bed, vacuum the mattress topper with a hose attachment to remove dust, hair and more. Repeat this on both sides.

C: Remove Stains

If there are any stains on the topper, make sure to treat the stains before you put the topper in storage. Spot treat stains with a washcloth and gentle stain remover. Blot until the stain is gone.

Try not to use too much liquid on your mattress topper, if the moisture can’t escape it can result in mold or mildew.

D: Treat odor

Keep your mattress topper fresh by getting rid of any odors before putting it in storage. Simply add a layer of baking soda to the topper and let sit for a few hours. Then, vacuum it up. You can repeat as necessary to remove any lingering odor.

E: Air dry

After cleaning your mattress topper, it’s essential to let it air dry. Leave out your topper for at least 24 hours, or until it is completely dry. Any moisture left in the mattress topper can result in mold and mildew (which can ruin it).

2. Roll the Mattress Topper

The next step is to roll your mattress topper. Roll it tight to make it easier to fit in smaller places.

You should never fold a mattress topper. It may seem like a good idea with the flexible material, but folding your topper can result in cracks and creases that can lead to permanent damage.

3. Put it in a Storage Bag

After you roll your mattress topper, find a secure storage bag to keep it in. The storage bag should also be sealed to ensure dust, dirt and bugs can’t reach the topper.

Many mattress toppers will come in a bag that has a vacuum seal attachment to compress the overall size of the mattress topper and make storage easier. Don’t worry if you have not saved the original packaging, any other aftermarket vacuum bag will work just as well. If your storage bag does not have a vacuum seal, seal it with tape to ensure nothing can get to your mattress topper.

If you do not have a storage bag, take two ribbons and tie them around the rolled mattress topper to keep it from unrolling.

4. Store in a Climate-Controlled Environment

Once you’ve completed all the steps above, you need to find the best space to store your mattress topper.  This may be a linen closet in your house or any other climate controlled area. Make sure to not place any heavy items on top of the mattress topper to prevent tears and folds.

A climate-controlled storage unit is one of the preferred answers. These units stay between 55- and 80 degrees Fahrenheit to mitigate most damage from humidity. Your mattress topper is sensitive to moisture, so it should be kept in a cool, dry area—like a temperature-regulated unit.
