What We Like About Sanford

OK, let's start with the nickname: "Celery City." What's not to like about that? Citrus farmers started growing celery in 1896 after The Great Freeze of 1894-95 killed their crop, so maybe celery saved Sanford? There's no truth to the rumor that "ants on a log" is the official snack of Sanford, though.

Since then, Sanford has grown from around 2,000 people to an estimated 61,000 in 2019, making it the third-largest city in the Greater Orlando metropolitan area. It's been an important center for citrus, a naval air station, a transportation hub, and, more recently, tourism.

Here are some of the things we are looking forward to in Sanford.

Life on the Water

One of the requirements of living in Florida is owning a boat, right? If you don't have some sort of boat or watercraft in the Sanford area, you're missing out. Sanford is situated on Lake Monroe at the headwaters of the St. Johns River (and next to Lake Jessup). Sanford even has a downtown marina offering free day-use slips for area visitors.

But you don't need a boat to enjoy the water. The RiverWalk trail is a paved walkway spanning several miles in downtown along Lake Monroe. Or, you can take a cruise on the St. Johns in a paddle-wheeler with the St. Johns Rivership Co. How cool is that?

Where to Eat & Play

Historic Downtown Sanford is a tourist and nightlife destination in Sanford centered along First Street. Make a stop at one of the area's craft breweries, or dine at some of the many award-winning, international restaurants.

Hollerbach's Willow Tree Café is the area's go-to for German food, events, and polka music. Stop in the Biergarten for a little gemütlichkeit—that's German for warmth and friendliness, not a type of beer!

Other world destinations include Zorba's Greek FoodNegril Spice (Jamaican), El Zocalo Mexican, plus Korean, Pacific-inspired seafood, even an Irish pub.

Of course, there are a fair amount of American/Southern-inspired restaurants, including the Colonial Room RestaurantThe Tennessee Truffle and barbecue at Fuel BBQ, too.

More Local Adventures

Sanford isn't just eating and boating. Head over to the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens to visit more than 350 animals (from more than 100 different species).

For a brush with the wild a few minutes out of town, hike over to Black Bear Wilderness Area, a 1,600-acre park with a variety of wetland habitats. Keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, swallow-tailed kites, and of course the park's namesake, the Florida Black Bear.

History and Museums

As an important transportation center along the St. Johns River, Sanford has a rich history in central Florida. While downtown is chock full of historic buildings, there are two area museums worth checking out.

Check out the Museum Of Seminole County History to experience a wide selection of amazing artifacts on display from Native American times through early forts and settlements, up through industrial and agricultural development in the region.

Don't miss the Goldsboro Museum, which documents the history of the nation's second incorporated black township. Goldsboro only lasted from 1891 – 1911, but the museum was founded in 2009 to resurrect the town's memory.

Education

Sanford is home to Seminole State College. The college was founded in Sanford in 1965 and has since grown to four campus locations. The school offers multiple Bachelor of Science degrees, plus associate degrees, technical certificates, and career certificates. It's also in a partnership with the University of Central Florida (in nearby Orlando) guaranteeing SSC grads admission to UCF.
