What we like about Pontiac

Pontiac has been an important location throughout history. Before European settlement, the Pontiac area was highly traveled by indigenous peoples because of its location near the confluence of the Saginaw Trail and the Nottawassippi River.

Learn more about the History of Pontiac as we share our favorite things about the city below.

Past to Present

Pontiac became a village in 1837, the same year Michigan gained statehood. The village was named after the famous war chief from the Ottawa tribe. Over the next 30 years, the village’s population grew quickly, gaining city status in 1861.

After being signed into legislation as a city, Pontiac’s central location attracted a wide variety of professionals and quickly became a rich center of industry. The area’s supply of natural resources led to the establishment of several carriage manufacturing companies and eventually the rise of Michigan’s automotive industry. General Motors, Oakland Motor Car Company, and Pontiac East Assembly all had automotive plants in the city.

For the next century, Pontiac saw tremendous growth until the Great Recession (2007-2009). Amid the recession, the city was on the verge of declaring bankruptcy. The State of Michigan stepped in and appointed emergency financial managers to oversee the city’s budget. To balance the budget, the appointed emergency managers sold off much of the city’s assets (parking meters, water treatment plant, etc.). In 2012, the city started to emerge from its economic troubles, with several notable investments being made in the area.

Today, Pontiac supports a population near 61,606 (2020 census). The city’s economy is still heavily rooted in manufacturing (Amazon opened a warehouse in the city in 2019), education, health care and retail trade.

Education

Pontiac is located near several prominent universities. The closest university to Pontiac is Western Michigan University-Auburn Hills, which offers degrees in science, art and business studies. Other universities in the area include Oakland University and Great Lakes University.

There are also some stellar public grade schools in the Pontiac area. Noor International Academy in nearby Sterling is one of the best public schools in Michigan. Notable private schools near Pontiac include Cranbrook Schools, Brother Rice High School, and Notre Dame Preparatory School.

Culture and Arts

Around southeast Michigan, Pontiac is known for its series of city festivals and events. The city’s Arts, Beats and Eats Festival was a widely attended festival that featured an art show, concerts and food trucks. The festival was hosted in Pontiac until 2010, when the festival moved to nearby Royal Oak. Even though the festival moved, many Pontiac residents continue to attend. The First Annual Scheme Cruise was held in Pontiac in September 2015. The festival included rap battles, basketball competitions and a car show.

Pontiac is also located near the north end of the famous Woodward Avenue. The boulevard extends into Detroit and was originally lined with mansions and businesses in the 1950s and 1960s.

Sports

Pontiac was once home to the Silverdome, the primary home of the Detroit Lions from 1975 to 2001. The stadium was also the home venue of the Detroit Pistons (1978-1988), the Detroit Express and the Michigan Panthers.

After the opening of Ford Field in 2002, the Silverdome was largely unused. The city, failing to find a good use for the space, eventually had to sell the stadium. The Silverdome was sold at auction in 2009 for $550,000 (less than 1% of the original construction cost). The Silverdome was torn down for good in 2017.

Pontiac is located 30 minutes away from Detroit, which supports the likes of the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings. The Detroit Red Wings are the most successful professional sports franchise in Michigan, hoisting 11 Stanley Cups and touting one of the longest consecutive playoff appearance streaks in all professional sports (25 seasons).

Food

Michigan is famous for a variety of foods, from pasties to Detroit-style pizza. Some of the best restaurants in Pontiac are Roadside B&G, The Moose Preserve Bar & Grill and Heroes BBQ & Brew.

If you decide to make the short drive to Detroit, you can also explore Downtown, Corktown and Royal Oak. All three of these neighborhoods are revered for their culinary prowess.
