What we like about San Antonio
With famous historical sites, culinary experiences, culture, entertainment and good vibes—you’ll never be bored in San Antonio. When you’re in The Alamo City, you’re guaranteed lots of fun and adventure! Here are some of our favorite things that make San Antonio a great place to live.
The Alamo
San Antonio is known for The Alamo, it’s even nicknamed “The Alamo City.”
Did you know, 300 years ago, before The Alamo was a fortress, it was a religious outpost? The outpost then became a defensive fortress in the year 1803 and was occupied by the Spanish Army, the Alamo Company.
The Battle of the Alamo in 1836 didn’t win Texans their independence but was undoubtedly an important part of the Texas Revolution. Enough so that Sam Houston cried “Remember the Alamo!” while attacking Santa Anna’s army about a month later.
Fast forward to present day, The Alamo is a cultural icon. Visitors can experience that crucial moment in Texas history as they visit the mission where heroes fought and died.
Food
There are lots of good eats in San Antonio. San Antonio is home to The Culinary Institute of America Texas campus, and it’s even been named a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
No matter what you’re in the mood for, San Antonio has it. Stop in at 2M Smokehouse where decorated pitmaster Esaul Ramos serves up some amazing 'que and sides. Bohanan’s has earned the title of the best steakhouse in town, Carnitas Lonja offers authentic Michoacan carnitas, and The Jerk Shack is known for its Caribbean cuisine. Don’t forget to stop into Restaurant Gwendolyn for a fine dining experience, or Supper for breakfast, lunch, or well, supper!
Education
There are a few colleges and universities in the San Antonio area including Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary’s University of San Antonio, Texas A&M University San Antonio, Texas Lutheran University, Trinity University and University of Texas at San Antonio.
San Antonio is also home to the Alamo Colleges District which includes Northeast Lakeview College, Northwest Vista College, Palo Alto College, St. Philip’s College and San Antonio College.
Culture and Arts
The Alamo is a big part of San Antonio’s culture, but there is plenty more to explore. Visit the Witte Museum for nature and science fun, or the San Antonio Museum of Art to see pieces from around the world. You can even get a sneak peek into the city’s past at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
San Antonio is full of museums, marketplaces and we can’t forget about the zoo! Don’t forget to check out one of the best attractions in Texas, the San Antonio River Walk.
Sports
As if history, amazing food, universities and plenty of cultural attractions aren’t enough to keep up with, San Antonio is also home to three professional sports teams. The San Antonio Spurs (NBA) won their most recent championship in 2014, The San Antonio Missions plays in the Minor League Baseball league and San Antonio FC is their team in the United Soccer League.
In terms of college sports, the University of Texas at San Antonio competes in NCAA Division I athletics. Their football team has attended two bowl games since starting their program in 2011. Trinity University has a Division III athletic program, and they are known for their winning tennis teams.
